💡 MACP Benefit: Under the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme, Level 6 employees who do not get a regular promotion are entitled to financial upgradation to Level 7 after 10 years of service in Level 6, and to Level 8 after 20 years. MACP gives pay fixation benefit but not the cadre/designation change of a regular promotion. This is particularly useful for Tax Assistants, Auditors and JAs who may face slower promotion cycles.

8th CPC ESTIMATE

🔭8th CPC Expected Salary – Grade Pay 4200 (Level 6)

The 8th Pay Commission (constituted January 2025) is expected to implement revised pay from January 1, 2026. Based on the expected fitment factor range, here is what Level 6 employees can anticipate:

Fitment Factor Scenario Entry Basic (₹) Max Basic (₹) Gross Entry – X City (₹) Est. In-Hand – X (₹) Real Hike

⚠️ 8th CPC Arrears for Level 6 Employees: Effective date is January 1, 2026. At the expected 2.28× fitment: New Basic = ₹35,400 × 2.28 = ₹80,712 → ~₹80,700. Monthly basic difference = ₹80,700 − ₹35,400 = ₹45,300/month. Over 18 months arrears = ₹45,300 × 18 = ₹8,15,400 (basic arrears alone). Adding DA difference (estimated avg 30% during arrear period) = total arrears approximately ₹10.5–12 lakh. File Form 10E at incometax.gov.in before your ITR to claim Section 89(1) relief on arrear taxation.

FAQ

📘 How to Use the Grade Pay 4200 Salary Calculator

Start with the post quick-pick or select the exact Level 6 pay stage from the 40-stage matrix. The calculator automatically fills Basic Pay from the stage, which reduces the risk of using the wrong salary base. If you want to verify the matrix separately, use the Pay Matrix Calculator or the Basic Pay Calculator by Grade Pay.

Next, choose the HRA city category and Transport Allowance option that matches the actual posting. X-city, Y-city and Z-city salary can differ materially even when Basic Pay is identical, so location should be checked before comparing in-hand salary across departments.

Then select NPS or GPF, confirm the contribution percentage, enter CGHS/CGEIS, monthly TDS and the current DA rate. The result separates gross salary, retirement deduction and in-hand salary so you can compare each item with the payslip.

For the cleanest payslip check, review Basic Pay first, then DA, HRA and TA, followed by NPS/GPF, CGHS and tax. If the first mismatched component is corrected, later totals usually reconcile automatically.

💰 Basic Pay, DA, HRA and TA at Level 6

Level 6 salary begins with Basic Pay. DA is calculated from Basic Pay, HRA is also linked to Basic Pay through the city percentage, and TA is a separate fixed allowance selected from the page options. These components should not be combined before the calculator applies its formulas.

Use the DA Calculator if you want to verify the dearness amount independently, and use the HRA Calculator when checking the effect of an X-, Y- or Z-city posting.

A transfer can change HRA and TA without changing Basic Pay. A promotion or increment, by contrast, changes Basic Pay and therefore affects DA, HRA and retirement deductions together.

This is why before-and-after salary comparisons work best when only one variable is changed at a time. Keep the city constant when measuring a pay-stage increase, and keep Basic Pay constant when measuring a transfer.

🏙️ X-City vs Y-City Salary for Grade Pay 4200

At the same Level 6 stage, X-city salary is generally higher because HRA and the selected TA can be higher than in Y or Z locations. The difference becomes larger as Basic Pay grows because HRA is percentage-based.

The post-wise table on this page is useful for a quick entry-stage comparison, while the main calculator is better when the employee has already moved beyond Stage 1. Always select the actual current stage rather than relying on entry salary for an experienced employee.

If Government accommodation is provided, use the nil-HRA option available in the HRA selector. That can significantly reduce gross salary even when the employee remains in a metro posting.

For transfer planning, save one calculation using the current city and another using the proposed city. The difference gives a cleaner estimate of the salary impact before considering personal rent and commuting costs.

🛡️ NPS, GPF, CGHS and TDS Deductions

For NPS employees, the calculator applies the selected contribution percentage to Basic Pay plus DA. Because this base rises after increment, promotion or DA revision, the retirement deduction can increase even when the employee does not manually change the percentage.

Pre-2004 employees may use GPF instead. The NPS vs Old Pension guide explains the broader structural difference, while this salary page focuses only on the monthly deduction and in-hand result.

CGHS/CGEIS and TDS are separate deductions. Enter the amount actually appearing on the payslip rather than assuming the default is correct for every employee and every year.

Gross salary should therefore never be treated as the amount credited to the bank. The net figure becomes reliable only after pension contribution, CGHS/CGEIS and tax are entered correctly.

📈 Annual Increment and 10-Year Salary Growth

The Level 6 matrix on this page contains 40 stages, and annual increment generally moves an employee to the next eligible cell. As Basic Pay rises, DA and HRA also rise in rupee terms, so the total salary increase is larger than the Basic Pay increase alone.

Use the Next Increment Date tool to check when the next increment is due. Once the new cell applies, return to this calculator and select the updated stage to generate a fresh payslip estimate.

The 10-year growth table is useful as a directional view of how Level 6 salary may evolve under regular increments. It assumes a stable DA and allowance environment, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed future payslip.

Promotion or MACP can create a bigger change than annual increment because the employee moves to a higher Pay Level. Compare the current Level 6 salary with Level 7 or Level 8 using the related calculators when planning that transition.

🚀 Career Progression from Level 6

Grade Pay 4200 / Level 6 is a common starting or mid-career level for Assistants, Tax Assistants, Auditors, Junior Accountants and similar posts. Career progression may come through departmental promotion, competitive examination or MACP depending on cadre rules.

A move from Level 6 to Level 7 increases the pay base and therefore affects DA, HRA and NPS together. Later progression to Level 8 or Level 10 can produce another significant jump in both gross and in-hand salary.

MACP provides financial upgradation when regular promotion is delayed, but it should not be confused with a cadre promotion or designation change. The salary benefit can be modeled here by switching to the corresponding higher-level calculator while keeping city and deductions unchanged.

For accurate planning, use actual departmental promotion rules for timing and use this page only for the salary effect once the higher pay level is known.

🔭 Reading the 8th CPC Estimate Section

The 8th CPC section on this page is a scenario model. It applies assumed fitment factors to the current Level 6 Basic Pay and estimates a possible future gross and in-hand salary. These figures should be kept separate from the present 7th CPC payslip calculation.

For a wider scenario comparison, use the 8th CPC Salary Calculator. That tool is better for comparing several fitment assumptions across different pay levels.

If revised pay is made effective before actual implementation, arrears may arise. Use the Fitment Arrears Calculator to model a delayed implementation period rather than multiplying one monthly difference by an arbitrary number of months.

Future fitment factors, revised HRA rates, TA and DA-reset rules should be treated as assumptions until final orders are issued. The current Level 6 calculator remains the correct base for present salary checks.

🧾 Payslip Reconciliation for Level 6 Employees

When comparing the calculator with an actual payslip, start with the matrix cell and Basic Pay. A wrong stage can make every later component look incorrect even when the formulas themselves are working properly.

Next compare DA, then HRA, then TA. After gross earnings match, move to NPS/GPF, CGHS/CGEIS and TDS. This sequence prevents users from chasing a net-salary difference that actually began with a wrong allowance input.

Department-specific allowances such as risk allowance, special duty allowance or night duty are not part of every Level 6 post. If they apply, they should be added only when the salary page provides an appropriate input or when they are being checked separately.

Keep one saved calculation after each increment, promotion or transfer. Over time, these snapshots create a useful salary history that can help with arrears and payroll verification.

⚠️ Common Grade Pay 4200 Calculator Mistakes

A common mistake is using Stage 1 Basic Pay for an employee who already has several increments. Always select the current Level 6 stage shown on the latest pay record.

Another mistake is choosing X-city HRA or the higher TA slab by default even when the employee is in a Y or Z location. This can overstate gross salary noticeably.

Users may also enter a GPF percentage while keeping the NPS scheme selected, or enter TDS that is already included in another deduction field. Each deduction should appear only once.

Finally, do not treat the 8th CPC preview as confirmed salary. It is a scenario layer added to the page and should remain separate from current payroll calculations.

✅ Grade Pay 4200 Verification Checklist

Before accepting the result, confirm pay stage, Basic Pay, DA rate, HRA city, TA slab, pension scheme, pension percentage, CGHS/CGEIS and TDS. Then compare the calculator output with the latest salary slip.

If the result differs, check the first mismatched component rather than changing several inputs together. Basic Pay, DA and HRA are the most common starting points.

For transfer or promotion planning, save the current calculation and rerun with only the changed input. This isolates the salary effect of the event and makes the comparison easier to explain.

For future-pay scenarios, clearly label projections as estimates and retain the current 7th CPC calculation separately for official salary reconciliation.

📌 Worked Level 6 Comparison Example

Suppose an employee is at Stage 1 with Basic Pay ₹35,400. First calculate the Y-city salary using the default TA and current deduction settings. Then change only HRA to X-city and TA to the higher city slab. The difference between the two outputs shows the location effect without mixing it with promotion or increment.

Next, keep the city unchanged and move to a higher pay stage. Because Basic Pay rises, DA, HRA and the retirement deduction rise together. Comparing these two runs gives a practical picture of how an annual increment affects both gross and in-hand salary.

🗂️ Record-Keeping Tip

Keep the latest payslip, promotion order, increment order and city-posting details together so future Level 6 salary checks can be reproduced accurately.

Which exam gives Grade Pay 4200 / Level 6 posting?▾
SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) is the primary route for Grade Pay 4200 posts in Central Government. Posts recruited via SSC CGL at Level 6 include: Assistant Section Officer (CSS, MEA, AFHQ), Tax Assistant (CBDT, CBIC), Junior Accountant/Auditor (CAG offices), Statistical Investigator Grade II (MOSPI), Junior Translator (Hindi), and Research Assistant (various ministries). Additionally, SSC CHSL promoted employees (UDC → LDC career path) may reach Level 6 via MACP/DPC. Some departmental exams (e.g., Railways RRB NTPC promotion, Income Tax Inspector internal) also lead to Level 6 posts.
What is the 8th CPC salary for Grade Pay 4200 / Level 6?▾
Under the most expected 8th CPC fitment factor of 2.28×: Entry basic pay at Level 6 will increase from ₹35,400 to approximately ₹80,700/month. Gross salary (X-city) would be approximately ₹1,38,000–₹1,45,000/month. In-hand would be approximately ₹1,20,000–₹1,28,000/month. Under union demand of 2.57×, basic would be ₹90,900 with gross around ₹1,55,000+. Arrears from January 2026 are estimated at ₹10–12 lakh (basic+DA difference over 18 months). DA will reset to 0% on implementation and HRA rates may be revised upward to 30%/20%/10% for X/Y/Z cities.
What is MACP for Level 6 employees?▾
Under the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme (DoPT OM No. 35034/3/2008 dated 19.05.2009), Central Government employees who do not receive a regular promotion get a financial upgrade after 10, 20 and 30 years of service. For a Level 6 (Grade Pay 4200) employee: 1st MACP = upgrade to Level 7 (GP 4600) after 10 years in Level 6; 2nd MACP = upgrade to Level 8 (GP 4800) after 20 years total service. The benefit is pay fixation at the next higher Level — salary is re-fixed at the next stage equal to or just above current pay in the upgraded Level. MACP gives the pay benefit but NOT the designation change or seniority of a regular promotion.
What are the HRA rates for Level 6 employees in 2026?▾
HRA for Level 6 (Grade Pay 4200) is calculated as a percentage of Basic Pay (only Basic — not Basic+DA): X-cities (metros): 27% of Basic = 27% × ₹35,400 = ₹9,558/month at Stage 1; Y-cities (urban): 18% of Basic = ₹6,372/month; Z-cities (other areas): 9% of Basic = ₹3,186/month; Government accommodation: Licence fee deducted, HRA not paid. The HRA rates (27%/18%/9%) apply when DA is 25% or above — they were revised upward from the original 24%/16%/8% after DA crossed 25% in July 2021. These rates remain at 27%/18%/9% until DA reaches 50%, after which they may be revised again (expected revision at 50% DA mark has not yet been formally announced as of March 2026).
What is the difference between Tax Assistant in CBDT vs CBIC?▾
Both Tax Assistant (CBDT) and Tax Assistant (CBIC) carry Grade Pay ₹4,200 (Level 6) with identical basic pay and DA. The differences lie in work environment and promotion prospects: CBDT (Income Tax) — work involves assessment, refunds, TDS, and returns processing; field offices in most cities; promotions to Income Tax Inspector (Level 7) via departmental exam; generally considered slightly more preferred due to stable posting locations. CBIC (Customs/GST) — work involves customs clearance, GST audit, anti-evasion; postings at ports, airports and field formations; promotions to Inspector of Central Excise/Customs (Level 7); risk of inconvenient postings but opportunity for risk allowance in some posts. Salary is identical at all stages for both posts.
